Abstract. Immersive Video Environments (IVEs) are a type of audiovisual simulation, where ‘users’ are immersed in panoramic video footage that is displayed on large screens. Compared to other visualisation techniques and simulations, IVEs benefit from some unique properties and offer interesting opportunities in Geoinformatics. In this talk, we will introduce the overall idea as well as the underlying architecture, workflows and technologies. We summarise what experiences we have gathered so far when we used IVEs in a variety of contexts. More specifically, we will discuss the potential IVEs hold regarding the design and evaluation of geo-visualisations, geo-interactions and location-based services.
Bio. Chris Kray is a professor in geoinformatics at the institute for geoinformatics (ifgi), which is part of the University of Münster, Germany. He obtained his PhD in computer science from Saarland University, Germany, and previously held positions in the UK at Lancaster University and Newcastle University. His research focusses on situated computing with a strong emphasis on interaction with spatiotemporal information. Example topics include pedestrian navigation support, location-based services, geovisualisation and smart cities. Much of his research work involves the development of prototypical systems, which are then evaluated with end users.
