15-Minute City

The 15-Minute City is a vision for urban life where residents can access all essential services – work, shopping, education, health, and leisure – within a 15 minute walk or bike ride from home. It promotes compact, mixed-use neighborhoods that reduce travel times, lower emissions, and enhance quality of life.

Beyond Walking and Biking: Expanding the 15-Minute City Area through Public Transport

This study expands the concept of the 15-Minute City by including public transport alongside walking and biking. By accounting for street slopes and transit options, it shows that public transport significantly reduces travel times to daily needs, effectively enlarging the area accessible within 15 minutes. The findings highlight which factors limit accessibility and demonstrate how integrating multiple modes can make cities more connected and convenient for residents.

How Inclusive is the 15-Minute City Concept in Vienna?

Clemens Walter has conducted his master’s thesis on the topic of inclusiveness in the 15-Minute City. Considering the diverse needs of different age groups is essential when discussing this concept, as each group experiences and accesses the city in different ways. The results of this research highlight areas where targeted interventions can improve inclusivity and help ensure that all groups are considered in future urban planning efforts. As part of his thesis, he also developed an interactive web map tool that enables the visualization and exploration of various aspects of inclusiveness within the city. In the near future, this web map will be hosted as a WebGIS application.
