Dr. Markus Kattenbeck
Head of Spatial HCI Lab
Short Bio
I have been leading the Spatial Human-Computer Interaction lab in the Geoinformation group since May 2019. Between 2022 and 2024 I was a MSCA Global Fellow and spent 18 months at UCSB working with Daniel R. Montello.
Prior to my current position, I worked as an IT consultant in the domain of IT Service Management for several years. I also held a post-doc position as a researcher and study programme coordinator at the University of Regensburg (2016-2019) and was a university assistant there (pre-doc) between 2010 and 2016.
Education
I am an Information Scientist by training. I hold a double-major in Information Science and European Ethnology from University of Regensburg, Germany.
My PhD thesis focused on landmark salience and it’s empirical measurement (defence: 2016, Information Science, University of Regensburg).

Current Projects
The lab is currently involved in two projects. The ZOE project deals with Augmented Reality for Cultural Heritage. Together with partners from Cyprus and Greece we primarily focus on a seamless experience for cultural heritage in both, indoor and outdoor environments. The fuTUrefit project “Unsere TU Wien” focuses on collecting memories of university members. We provide a mobile web application for sharing memories, a mobile Augmented Reality application to explore them and use a head-mounted display to show how buildings evolved in-situ.

Teaching
I very much enjoy teaching at all levels, including supervision. My current primary classes relate to the implementation of Geographic Information Systems (mobile and desktop) and computational geometry. I have taught all kinds of different class formats and sizes ranging from lectures with 180+ students to project seminars with 5 students.
