Biography

Paolo Fogliaroni was born in L’Aquila, Italy, in 1982. In 2008 he received his Computer Engineer (MSc.) degree with excellence and honors for the thesis work from the University of L’Aquila (Italy). From 2008 to 2012 he was a doctoral student in the International Research Training Group on Semantic Integration of Geospatial Information. He carried out his doctoral studies in the Cognitive System (CoSy) group at the University of Bremen (Germany), where he received his Dr.-Ing. (Ph.D.) degree in Cognitive and Geographic Information Science with the final evaluation of Summa cum laude. From 2012 to 2018 Paolo held a post-doctoral position as University Assistant in the Department for Geodesy and Geoinformation at Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien). Currently, he is leading a project funded by Wiener Netze that involves the conception and realization of techniques to visualize outdoor underground structures through Mixed Reality.

Paolo’s scientific publications mainly focus on the fields of Qualitative Spatial and Temporal Reasoning, Spatial Queries and Search, Spatial Semantic, Cognitive Robotics, and Human-Computer Interaction. His research interests encompass (but are not limited to) the following topics:

  • spatial human-computer interaction;
  • augmented and virtual reality;
  • outdoor and indoor navigation;
  • geographic information science and systems;
  • volunteered geographic information;
  • VGI data quality assessment;
  • spatial data access methods;
  • spatial data integration and matching;
  • qualitative spatial representation and reasoning;
  • cognitive robotics;
  • cognitive ergonomics;
  • 2D and 3D computational geometry.
